About Idaho Gives

Q. What is Idaho Gives?

Idaho Gives – a program of the Idaho Nonprofit Center and powered by ICCU – is designed to bring the state together, raising money and awareness for Idaho nonprofits. Donations can be collected from April 29- May 2.
IdahoGives.org provides an easy-to-use platform for donors to search, support and donate to Idaho nonprofits.

Q. When is Idaho Gives?

Idaho Gives is April 29 - May 2, 2024 from 12:00 am MT (11:00 pm PT) April 29 to 11:59 pm MT (10:59 pm PT) May 2.

Q. Which organizations can participate?

Eligible organizations are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations headquartered or providing services in Idaho and registered and in good standing with the Idaho Secretary of State.

Q. Why should my organization participate?

Idaho Gives is a great way to boost your organization’s fundraising efforts and provides eligible nonprofits the opportunity to reach potential new donors with the visibility that only a state-wide effort can generate. To ensure success, your profile needs to be updated on IdahoGives.org and custom-branded to tell your story.

Q. How can my organization be successful during Idaho Gives?

These are the most impactful strategies we've seen:

  • Matches - Last year, organizations with matches raised on average $14,000 more than those without.
    • Have a guaranteed major gift? Ask the donor if you can publish it as a match! Simply having that match counter on your profile entices potential donors.
  • Peer-to-Peer Fundraisers - Last year, organizations with P2P fundraisers raised on average $5,500 more than those without.
    • Board members are a great source for peer-to-peer fundraising - especially if they're active on social media!
  • Collaboration - Organizations who come together for events are often more successful. Start an event in your area or join one that's already being planned.
For more strategies, attend a webinar, view our training videos, and check out our tips in the Nonprofit Toolkit.

Q. What is an offline gift, and why are offline gifts important?

Offline donations are any cash or check donations your organization receives towards your Idaho Gives campaign. It's important to track your offline donations on your dashboard
It counts toward your campaign goal, matches, and the total of the giving day as a whole. Including offline donations help us measure the full impact of the Idaho Gives program.

Q. What are the prizes and how does my organization enter to win them?

Prizes are given in a variety of categories and designed to incentivize organizations to access available trainings, promote their Idaho Gives campaign, and engage with donors. You can learn more on our Prize FAQ page.

Q. What portion of a donation made on Idaho Gives is tax deductible?

Tax deductibility for a donor is based on giving to a nonprofit; it's not dependent upon how that nonprofit uses the funds. On GiveGab, the nonprofit pays for the fees, regardless if the donor elects to cover. GiveGab gives donors the option to increase their donation by an amount equal to the fees the nonprofit will pay so that the nonprofit realizes the full amount of the intended donation after payment of the fees. Just because the donor is given this option does not make the additional amount non-deductible.

Outside of using GiveGab, nonprofits do not provide their donors a breakdown of what portion of their donation is deductible (unless the donor receives something of value in return such as a dinner, etc.). That's because deductibility is based on giving to the nonprofit, not how the nonprofit chooses to use the funds. You could almost consider when the donor elects to cover the fees, that portion of the donation is a restricted gift that will be used to pay for the expenses incurred to receive the gift. Restricted gifts are tax deductible, because it's based on who is receiving the gift (nonprofit) not what the gift is used for.

Ultimately, whether a donor decides to deduct the fees as a donation on their tax returns is their option, and we do not provide tax advice. If they want to be ultra-conservative, they can choose to not take a deduction for the fees when they file. Who receives the donation is what determines tax deductibility, not how the donation is used.

GiveGab does not provide tax advice. Please consult your local tax professional about what portion of the full donation amount can be claimed as a charitable contribution.

Q. What is the Idaho Regional Liaison Committee and where can I sign up?

We heard your feedback from the past few years and came to this conclusion. This structure will benefit participating nonprofits by keeping more of the funds raised and also helping advertise Idaho Gives.

    Q. What if my organization doesn't receive any donations from Idaho Gives?

As long as you complete the available training webinars in the Live Webinars section, we will refund your registration fee after Idaho Gives concludes.

    Q. Why do you require personal information to enable donations?

Recently, new verification requirements were passed in the United States by financial regulators that enforce Know Your Customer (KYC) rules. This additional information is required to help create a safer and more secure financial ecosystem by helping prevent crimes like money laundering, fraud, and tax evasion. Because these requirements come from financial regulators, such as governmental entities and card networks, any platform that accepts online payments will need to comply.

In order to comply, organizations participating in Idaho Gives that have previously been verified to receive donations on GiveGab may need to provide additional information to maintain their verification status. If additional information is required of your organization, GiveGab will be reaching out with instructions on how to view and provide that information through a secure portal.

GiveGab partners with Stripe, a PCI Level 1 compliant payment processor, which is the highest level of compliance available, to ensure that the collection of information is completely safe and secure.

Here are some questions you might be asked:
    • The legal first and last name of your organization representative -- Nicknames and middle names will not be verified.
      • If your organization representative has recently changed their first or last name (within the past 5 years), enter in their previous legal first and last name.
    • The last four digits of their social security number.
    • Their birthdate.
    • The mailing address and phone number of the organization representative.

Who should complete the organization representative information?

More information about this verification process

    Q. What are the other fees for Idaho Gives 2024?

For each donation made, a “Technology and Processing Fee” will be taken out. Here is the breakdown:

    • Payment options
      • Credit card: 2.5% + $.30 per transaction
      • Plaid/ACH payment: $100 minimum donation + $3.00 flat fee
    • 2% GiveGab fee
    • Total for credit card transactions: 4.5% + $.30 per transaction
    • Total for Plaid/ACH: 2% + $3.00 per transaction
      • We have worked hard to keep these fees as low as possible. In 2017, the total fees were 6.7%. In 2016 the total fees were 8.9%. Learn more about the true cost of an "offline" donation here.

Note: The Idaho Gives platform, GiveGab, makes it VERY easy for donors to cover these fees. In 2020, more than 94.2% of donors covered these fees. Offline donations will still be available to be plugged in. These funds will be added to your organization’s total and the Idaho Gives total. It will NOT count towards the Idaho Gives Award Pool prizes.

    Donation Platform (GiveGab)

    Q. What is GiveGab?

GiveGab is an online giving platform that helps nonprofits raise money, engage donors, and manage volunteers quickly and efficiently. GiveGab offers a full portfolio of simple and easy-to-use products that allow organizations to function in a more streamlined manner.

    Q. What is your policy on other giving platforms?

The spirit of Idaho Gives is to broadcast our state’s nonprofit stories and for organizations to engage with donors in a truly meaningful way. We kindly ask you to not use other giving platforms (Facebook Fundraisers, PayPal, etc.) outside of the Idaho Gives platform (through GiveGab) while still promoting your Idaho Gives centered campaign.

When you use other giving platforms, we do not have a true reflection of Idaho’s generous contributions as those funds are not included in the grand total and the organizations’ personal goals. The folks at Idaho Gives and GiveGab work very hard to make the day an easy way for donors to give and an effective way for nonprofits to tell their story. A lot of time and thought goes into making the best day for Idaho’s nonprofits.

The more organizations that abandon the Idaho Gives platform – but still benefit from the marketing and general buzz of the day – the less leverage the Idaho Gives team has to promote this 24-hour statewide fundraiser. We want each nonprofit to collect as many funds as they possibly can and to educate the state on all the amazing work you all do. We ask you to please be respectful of Idaho Gives as a whole and to support the efforts taken to raise money and awareness for Idaho nonprofits.

However, if you do happen to receive donations outside of IdahoGives.org, make sure to enter those into your Idaho Gives campaign page as offline gifts. They will not be counted towards many of the prizes but will be reflected in your total.

    Q. Can more than one person claim admin access on our organization's page?

Yes, pending approval from existing administrators. All administrators will need to create profiles on GiveGab. Every person with administrative access will receive emails regarding updates to their page.

    Q. What percentage of each contribution will my organization receive?

Your organization has the opportunity to receive 100% of all donations when donors choose to “cover the fees”.  In 2024, the standard online fees are 4.5% plus $.30 per credit card transaction. For ACH transfers, the fees are 2% + $3.00 per transaction.

    Q. When will we receive the donated funds?

Organizations will receive all donations, less any uncovered processing fees, within three business days via direct deposit as long as bank account and routing information has been verified. GiveGab uses a PCI Level I compliant payment service to ensure that all financial data is secure.

This allows GiveGab to respond to any donor requests for refunds or corrections. Example: the donor accidentally added an extra zero on to their gift turning a $100 to $1,000.

    Q. How does the Plaid/ACH Payment work?

If a donor chooses to pay using the ACH bank account payment option through processor Plaid, the donation minimum is $100, and there is a flat fee of $3.00 per transaction rather than a percentage. This makes the total transaction fees for Plaid bank account payment $3.00 plus the platform fee of 2% per transaction. Through Plaid, you avoid paying the credit card fee. Learn how to use the ACH function here.

    Q. How does our organization identify donors and contributions? Can I download a donations report?

All participating organizations can access and download a .CSV file of their donations via their administrative dashboard on GiveGab. The report is updated in real-time and will include the donation payout date for bank account reconciliation, donation information (including a breakdown of the fees), along with the donor's name and contact information. Click here to download a sample donation report.

    Q. What is a DAF?

A DAF is a Donor Advised Fund. A Donor Advised Fund is a giving vehicle that allows donors to make a charitable contribution and receive an immediate tax deduction.

    Q. What portion of a donation made on GiveGab is tax deductible?

Tax deductibility for a donor is based on giving to a nonprofit; it's not dependent upon how that nonprofit uses the funds. On GiveGab, the nonprofit pays for the fees, regardless if the donor elects to cover. GiveGab gives donors the option to increase their donation by an amount equal to the fees the nonprofit will pay so that the nonprofit realizes the full amount of the intended donation after payment of the fees. Just because the donor is given this option does not make the additional amount non-deductible.

Outside of using GiveGab, nonprofits do not provide their donors a breakdown of what portion of their donation is deductible (unless the donor receives something of value in return such as a dinner, etc).

    Charitable Solicitation

    Q. What is state charitable solicitation registration?

Nonprofits are held to a high standard of government regulation and public scrutiny. And that is with good reason! Eligible 501(c) nonprofits are exempt from federal corporate taxes and have access to public funding. These benefits are not typically available to for-profit businesses, so laws are in place to protect the public and ensure nonprofits do not abuse their financial advantages. The IRS and states all have requirements for nonprofits.

    Q. Why is state charitable solicitation registration compliance important?

While 501(c) nonprofits receive key financial benefits, the penalties for noncompliance can be serious. The IRS can revoke a nonprofit’s tax exemption and impose fines that can accrue daily. The states can administratively dissolve a nonprofit corporation and levy steep financial penalties. Perhaps worst of all, an organization can lose out on a grant or large donation because it has not kept itself in good standing.

Taking a proactive approach to compliance helps ensure the sustained success of the organization. The cost of staying compliant is small in comparison to the much larger costs of noncompliance. The saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” could not be more true in this context.

    Q. What are the key aspects of state charitable solicitation registration compliance?

The IRS provides tax exemptions to eligible nonprofits under IRC 501(c). Public charities and private foundations receive 501(c)(3) tax exemption. The IRS scrutinizes organizations when they apply for 501(c)(3) but also ensures that those organizations meet the ongoing obligations to remain eligible. Nonprofits must file a 990 tax form each year with the IRS to disclose their financial data for the year.

Each state has their own set of requirements. Nonprofits are typically incorporated in a given state as a nonprofit corporation. The state in which the nonprofit has incorporated will impose requirements on the nonprofit, and those responsibilities typically span across multiple state agencies. Usually, nonprofits must submit an annual filing to the corporations division of the secretary of state, maintain its license to fundraise (charitable solicitation registration), file for a state business license, and maintain state-level tax exemption with the revenue department. As nonprofits expand outside of the state or operate nationwide, they must comply with the same items in each other state as well.

In addition to IRS and state filing requirements, nonprofits must keep adequate records. Keeping accurate and complete records is critical in the event that an organization is audited. It is also common that board members or donors request information from the organization. Finally, records are necessary for submitting applications and renewal filings with various government agencies.

    Q. When I check the box on GiveGab to declare state charitable solicitation registration compliance, what am I attesting to?

When you check the box you are attesting (defined as "declaring that something exists or is the case") that your organization is compliant with applicable state fundraising requirements in the states in which you may solicit donors using the GiveGab platform.

    Q. Do you have additional resources to reference about state charitable solicitation registration?

Yes! Here are a few more resources from Harbor Compliance to help you:

    Events

    Q. What in-person events are the Idaho Gives team organizing?

The Idaho Gives and Idaho Nonprofit Center teams do not organize the in-person events and block parties during the week of Idaho Gives. We help event organizers make connections to other participating nonprofits and businesses, and we heavily market these events to our media partners. We may also provide stickers and modest signage to event organizers to help the visibility of the event. We love in-person events, and we try to attend as many as our team of six can!

Do you have an event to share? Post it on our Events Page!

    Q. How do organizations participate in the Boise block party?

The businesses of the Lusk District in Boise (by Boise State University) put on a block party every year. This block party usually features live music, food and drink specials, and around 50 nonprofit booths. This is not an event planned by the Idaho Nonprofit Center.

The Lusk District has a sign up sheet published. Please apply by April 16th

    Q. Are there any in-person events in my area?

You bet! There are several cities that put on live events of various scales. Do you have an event to share? Post it on our Events Page!

      Q. How will my organization know if we’ve won a prize?

We will announce the winners on social media and on the Prize page under the individual prize descriptions.

      Q. Can people be in the Philanthropic Photo? What about animals?

Yes and yes! You are welcome to include whatever you like in your photo as long as it also includes some Idaho Gives swag (like a t-shirt or Facebook frame). Please keep it family-friendly and use the hashtag: #IdahoGives.

      Q. Do my board members need to donate a certain amount to be considered for the Beaming Board prize?

As long as each board member donates the minimum Idaho Gives donation amount ($10.00), then your organization will be considered for the beaming board prize. You will need to submit all required information through the link on the prize page.

      Q. What is an online/verified prize?

An online/verified prize means that there is a unique email attached to each online, offline, and DAF donation.

      Q. Does my organization have to get a single $1,000 donation for the Mega Match prize or can it be multiple donations that add up to $1,000 and are then matched?

Here’s how it works: Raise at least $1,000 in donations from any number of donors, then have a board member or for-profit company match those donations with another $1,000, resulting in a total of $2,000. You are then entered into the drawing for the Mega Match prize.

      Q. Can my organization still be eligible for the Surpass the Past prize if we didn’t participate in 2022 but did in 2021 or earlier?

Unfortunately, you are only eligible to receive this prize if you participated in Idaho Gives in 2022.

      Q. My organization won a prize! When and how will I receive it?

Congratulations! We will be sending checks to all of the winners after the conclusion of Idaho Gives.

      Q. What if my organization doesn’t receive any donations through Idaho Gives?

As long as you complete the available trainings, we will refund your registration fee after Idaho Gives concludes.
